Abuse is rarely an intentional act. Too frequently, a well-intentioned, loving, acutely stressed parent loses control and strikes out or shakes the baby he or she adores. Anyone, under extreme circumstances, has the potential to abuse.
The best solution of child abuse is its prevention. The earlier in a child’s life that intervention is started, the more effective it is. Parent-Child relationships are critical to development. When parents and caregivers show responsive early care, critical bonding occurs and babies thrive.
At CRN we are breaking the cycle of abuse in Portland. Providing services to families with challenging life circumstances our emphasis is on secure, safe and stable parent child relationships and the social/emotional well-being of the most vulnerable of children.
How can you help keep children safe?
- Learn the signs and symptoms of abuse, so you can report known or suspected child abuse to the local Child Abuse Team at 503-823-009.
-
Participate in CRN’s CARE 4 Kids program during Child Abuse Prevention Month. Encourage a local restaurant or business to donate the proceeds from a specific menu item, service or sales for an hour, a day or all month in APRIL.
You can double your donation! The Collins Foundation will match new and increased gifts! Please consider becoming a member of our family of supporters by making a one-time donation or spreading your gift over time by becoming a member of our Financial Family.
- Learn and share the Five R’s of Child Abuse Prevention.
- Encourage individuals and communities to support children and families. Share this flyer. You can download and make copies of for use within your organization or community.
- Help a stressed-out parent by offering to baby-sit, make dinner or just lend an understanding ear.
- Organize an event or fundraiser at your business, church or social group to raise money to support critical prevention programs.
- Volunteer your time and talents whether it’s once a week, once a month or once a year.
Who benefits?
- Early intervention reduces the price we pay in the future. Prevention services to one family at CRN cost $9,464 for one year. By comparison, the State of Oregon pays $19,658 for one child in foster care.
- 400 participants (parents and children) will be served at CRN over the next year
- The whole community benefits. When the cycle of abuse is broken we see a reduction in the rate of substance abuse, teen pregnancy, violence and juvenile crime.
CRN's CARE 4 Kids program is an opportunity for your business to gain new customers while supporting the work at Children's Relief Nursery. Committing a percentage of sales is just one way to tailor your participation. Email Sue or call (503) 595-4506 for more details.
