At-Risk Children and Families Need Your Financial Support
Children's Relief Nursery serves at-risk children & families in St. Johns free of charge and we need your support! During these challenging economic times, CRN and our families need your help more than ever.
One of our clients shared her story at Portland's Original Iron Chef on May 17. Alissa and her son Sage, who was severely underweight and unable to eat when he came to the Nursery, turned their lives around with the programs and services CRN provides. If you missed her speech, please take a few moments and view Alissa's inspirational story. New Board Members Serve Children’s Relief Nursery
Jeanne Rohlf has worked in the banking industry for 25 years, helping companies foster cash management practices. She brings both this and public speaking experience to the board, and promises that she is “pretty creative and hope(s) to donate some interesting items to the auction for sale!” Having at one time been a single mother of young twins, Jeanne also brings an empathy for children and families whose day to day struggle to survive and thrive is hampered by the lack of a supportive environment.
Lynn Bright “likes what CRN has accomplished in the community and welcomes the opportunity to contribute and help grow the organization.” She has a background in finance with an understanding of the marketing process; experience with organizational structures and corporate operations; and understands the duties, responsibilities and functions of boards and committees.
Students Helping Children
A group of students at Thurston High School awarded $1,000 to Children’s Relief Nursery through its Community 101 Grant. This program, funded by the PGE Foundation and Oregon Department of Education Learn & Serve America (funded by the corporation for National and Community Service), teaches leadership, civic engagement and philanthropy. Students learn about issues in their community and discover the difference they can make in their own backyard by helping organizations through volunteerism and grantmaking. Sue Warren, Development Director at Children’s Relief Nursery, met with the students to describe the families and services at CRN. The students responded with their generosity.
Foundations Support CRN’s Work
Other recent grants to Children’s Relief Nursery have included gifts from The Hampton Family Foundation of The Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) and The Deibele Family Fund of The OCF, which gave $10,000 and $2,000 respectively, to support the general work of the Nursery. The PGE Foundation also gave $10,000 to support the Therapeutic Classrooms.
Our Parents Get Pampered
Women of Vision members brought together hairstylists, manicurists, massage therapists and make up artists to treat 17 CRN mothers to a day of pampering on May 31. Everyone volunteered their time, and the women who came really appreciated the chance to take care of themselves while Women of Vision took care of their kids. Click here for details!
David Anderson Is Portland’s New Iron Chef
The competition was fierce, and the Secret Ingredient of Lamb was tricky, but challenger David Anderson of Vindalho was able to beat out John Newman of Newmans at 988 at Portland’s Original Iron Chef on May 17. In the People’s Choice Competition, Adam Sappington from Country Cat Dinnerhouse & Bar won the opportunity to challenge Anderson for the title at next year’s event.
In addition to the cooking competitions, more than $300,000 was raised to help prevent child abuse and neglect at Children’s Relief Nursery. THANK YOU to all the volunteers, donors, guests and chefs who made the event such a success.
