When 20-month-old Maria* first came to the Nursery, her family was under a great deal of stress. Her Mom, Catalina*, had just left her dad because he was out of control. She knew home was not a safe place for her daughters. They were immediately isolated and faced the many challenges of poverty. To add to their problems, witnessing the verbal and physical abuse between her parents caused Maria to develop an unhealthy attachment to her mother. They needed help.
Maria began attending the Therapeutic Classroom where her attachment and emotional issues could be closely monitored and observed. At the same time, Catalina worked with her case manager to navigate through various social service systems to gain support. She also attended parenting classes where she learned about child development and connected with others struggling with many of the same problems. With the help of her case manager, Maria successfully graduated Children's Relief Nursery, exceeding her goals.
