Eligible Children

Because our program is voluntary, to be eligible for the program parents/caregivers must be willing to work toward achieving a family goals plan. Qualifying families are under significant stress and in need of support, intervention, and respite services. Children's Relief Nursery (CRN) families frequently live below the poverty line, reside in North Portland, and have a least one child below the age of five. We are also able to serve mothers who are in their third trimester of pregnancy if they meet the other qualifying criteria.

What to expect

  • The family will be assigned to a case manager who will make home visits to aid the family in accessing resources, finding ways to reduce family stressors, and to talk about their child’s development.
  • Our families have access to respite care.
  • All families can choose to enroll in the parent connection groups – offered in English and Spanish. Families that complete this program can join a parent support group for ongoing social support and idea sharing.
  • The therapeutic classroom is available for children who may need additional support in certain areas of development or behavior.
  • Parent/child interaction groups occur at different times during the year. These activities are a special opportunity for parents to play with children, meet other parents, and explore community activities for children.
  • Short-term family and child mental health services are available.
  • Meals are served during classes and transportation is often provided.

How are children enrolled?
  • Parents/caregivers should call CRN and ask for “Intake”. They will be asked to provide a brief family description including the following: Who makes up the family? Where does the family live? What is the family income? What is causing stress for the family?
  • Next, an intake meeting will be scheduled. This meeting usually takes about 90 minutes and will include the initial paperwork, a conversation about the child and his/her development, the family’s situation, the family’s stress, and any other concerns.
  • Following a review by CRN Staff, a case manager will call to notify the family about its enrollment status - usually within one to two weeks.
