The best solution for child abuse and neglect is to prevent it. We’re breaking the cycle before it’s too late. Our early childhood program builds healthy families so kids can reach kindergarten prepared to succeed.

Evan Zimmerman Wins Iron Bartender
The Second Annual Iron Bartender was so much fun! We raised over $20,000 to support programs and services for at-risk children that night. Mixologist Evan Zimmerman from Laurelhurst Market won first place with his “Scandinavian Sour” in the competition (held on Jan 21). Zimmerman competed against Neil Kopplin of Clyde Common, Elizabeth Markham of Beaker & Flask and Jacob Grier of Carlyle Restaurant. More than 200 people came out to show their support and sample the creations. Iron Bartender Evan Zimmerman will be featured on May 22 at Portland Iron Chef.

Nursery Recognized in Top 100
On September 29, Oregon Business Magazine hosted the first annual event to recognize and honor Oregon’s 100 Best Nonprofits to work for. We are pleased to announce that Children’s Relief Nursery made the ranking, taking spot #26 on the list of medium-sized organizations (25-74 employees). We are thrilled with this recognition and the statement it makes about our workplace, culture and employees.

Some of the loveliest moments of the event came when Barbara Roberts, former governor and a CRN founding board member, took the stage for her keynote address…

…This accomplished, much-revered and incredibly respected woman shared her perspective of the nonprofit world. To the audience of 600 people she announced that her proudest, most rewarding six years of board work came from her time with the Children’s Relief Nursery. She spoke warmly of us and had high praise for what we’re doing. It was an incredibly proud moment for us.

The 100 Best Nonprofits were determined by employee satisfaction and importance ratings of 60 workplace qualities in six categories: benefits and compensation; work environment; decision-making and trust; performance management; career development and learning; and sustainable practices. In addition, organizations had to answer more than 50 questions covering a comprehensive set of benefits and workplace practices. Oregon Business Magazine partnered with TACS, a local organization supporting the nonprofit sector and Portland research firm Davis Hibbitts & Midghall to score and rank the winning 100 nonprofits.

Thank you to all of you-donors, volunteers, staff, board members and founders--for your dedication to this organization and our work together. Your support is a key part of our success-past, present and into the future.
Breaking the Cycle
When 20-month-old Maria* first came to the Nursery, her family was under a great deal of stress. Her Mom, Catalina*, had just left her dad because he was out of control. She knew home was not a safe place for her daughters. They were immediately isolated and faced the many challenges of poverty. To add to their problems, witnessing the verbal and physical abuse between her parents caused Maria to develop an unhealthy attachment to her mother. They needed help.

Maria began attending the Therapeutic Classroom where her attachment and emotional issues could be closely monitored and observed. At the same time, Catalina worked with her case manager to navigate through various social service systems to gain support. She also attended parenting classes where she learned about child development and connected with others struggling with many of the same problems. With the help of her case manager, Maria successfully graduated Children's Relief Nursery, exceeding her goals.
